Our Mission

Alzheimer’s is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.   The David Moore Foundation is a non-profit public charity with the mission of raising awareness and funds to support research and care of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Katie Church
Determined to honor her father, Katie began the fundraising effort by forming Team Unknown and hosting a fundraising event at Unknown Brewery in 2015. It started small with mostly friends and family, but each year continued to grow. Now held at HopFly Brewery, the event has become a premier fundraising event in Charlotte, primarily sponsored by local businesses and individuals.

In 2019, Katie teamed up with Jeff Ray to establish the Sandra Ray Invitational golf tournament to further support the fight against ALZ.  This became the catalyst for creating the David Moore Foundation.  Katie's vast experience in financial services continues to assist her with this undertaking.

Katie loves to travel, in particular to ski, and in her spare time she enjoys golfing and being home on the lake with her husband, Duane, and their dogs, Bo and Max.

Jeff Ray
Like Katie, Jeff has had the unfortunate experience of seeing the devastating effects that Alzheimer’s inflicts on a loved. Jeff has was been truly inspired by the passionate fundraising efforts of Katie and Duane for Team Unknown. So, he has joined forces with them in honor of his mother, Sandra Ray. Jeff’s primary goal for the David Moore Foundation is to provide as much funding as possible for Alzheimer’s research, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure in his lifetime.

Jeff’s local, regional and national market knowledge of the consumer packaged goods industry aid him in his efforts to engage and attract corporate sponsorships for the Sandra Ray Invitational.

In his spare time Jeff plays way too much golf (most often with Duane and Katie) and is an avid fisherman. He also enjoys spending time at home with his English Bulldog, Diesel “the miracle dog”.

Duane Church
Duane never had a charitable cause that he was truly passionate about.  When David was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s, he witnessed the devastating impact it had on Katie and her family.  After much research and education on the disease, inspired by Katie’s passion, he became committed to raising awareness and money to help fund treatment, caregivers and ultimately a cure.

In 2015, Duane began participating in numerous local fund raising events where he met others in the community that had or were experiencing the same impacts of this devastating disease.  Through the creation of the David Moore Foundation, Duane found the passion to get behind a cause he could truly relate to and support 100%!

In his spare time, Duane enjoys golf and spending time on the lake with family and friends.

David Moore

Dr. David Huddler Moore had a five year battle with young onset Alzheimer's Disease before he passed in 2013.  He was an amazing father, husband, son, doctor and friend to many.  He began his battle wanting to do everything he could to slow the progress, so with the help of his wife, Ann, he participated in a trial study which throughout the duration of his battle.  Unfortunately nothing helped and he lost the fight at the age of 63.  His contributions to the cause didn’t stop there though as his brain was donated to Harvard University for Alzheimer’s research in hopes of helping those that are impacted in the future.

David was born in Newark, OH and grew up in Indianapolis, IN.  David attended Duke University, graduating in 1972 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. After college he returned to his hometown of Indianapolis to attend medical school at the University of Indiana before moving to St. Louis, MO where he completed his pediatric residency and subsequent fellowship in pediatric infectious disease at St. Louis Children's Hospital of Washington University.  In 1980 David moved his family to Charlotte, NC where he began his pediatric practice with the Nalle Clinic. David worked at the Nalle Clinic for 20 years before moving on to the CMC Physicians Network where he worked until his retirement in 2009. During his career, David had numerous achievements including, being the first pediatric infectious disease specialist in Charlotte, acting as Chairman of Pediatrics at Carolinas Medical Center multiple times and teaching residents and medical students at CMC and Levine Children's Hospital as an Adjunct Professor for the University of North Carolina.

In addition to his love for medicine David was also an avid sports fan, in particular following the St. Louis Cardinals and Duke University Blue Devils. He also enjoyed annual ski trips to Vail, CO where he went almost every year since it opened in 1962, even after his diagnosis of Alzheimer's.  After passing his family spread his ashes over his favorite ski run in Vail, Riva Ridge, where they still visit him regularly.

Sandra Ray

Sandra Ray was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2017; after five years battling the disease she passed in 2022. Sandra was a quintessential example of a faithful life of giving, loving and selfless character.  She  lived those values everyday of her life, and as a result, instilled those values into the two generations that follow her.  She will always remain a shining light of a faith driven and purposeful life.

Sandra was born and raised in rural South Carolina. She was a majorette and a star basketball player in high school. Upon graduation, she attended Furman University.  She transferred to North Greenville Junior College, where she met the love of her life, Bill Ray. Bill swept her off her feet and they soon married. Bill joined the Air Force and they began their married life together in Montgomery, Alabama, where they were assigned to Maxwell Air Force Base. While they were stationed there, Sandra gave birth to 2 daughters; Kim and Lisa. As the family grew, Bill and Sandra made the decision to leave the service and move to Greenville, South Carolina. There, Sandra gave birth to their third child, Jeff.

After living in High Point, NC and Vidalia, Georgia, Sandra and Bill settled in Charlotte in 1972. As her children got older Sandra transitioned from stay at mom to working mom. She had a very successful career in retail banking with Wachovia (Now Wells Fargo). After more than 25 years of exceptional service, Sandra retired in 1999.

Sandra was a very passionate and active member of University Hills Baptist church for many years, living out the faith that had been instilled in her as a young child. Her other passion during this time was her role as beloved grandmother.  She was actively involved in the lives of her 5 grandchildren.  Bill and Sandra’s lives came full circle after Sandra’s diagnosis when they moved back to Greenville, SC, where they spent Sandra's final years together in the city where they first met.
